HISTORY

Sigma Chi was founded on the Miami University (Ohio) campus on June 28, 1855 by seven men.  Our founding resulted from an injustice incurred upon six of the seven founders as junior members in another fraternity, where they were instructed to do something that they did not agree with.

They felt that principles they professed were imperfectly realized by any other college fraternity, which lead to the establishment of Sigma Chi.  From our beginning, the Fraternity has been based upon the high ideals of Friendship, Justice & Learning

For over 150 years, Sigma Chi has continued to recruit, pledge, train, and initiate those men who possess uniquely noble ideals.  During this time, membership has grown to over 250,000 members and over 360 undergraduate and alumni chapters around the world.

HISTORY (FRESNO STATE)

Sigma Tau was the second fraternity (by a few weeks) founded at Fresno State College on November 10, 1921, making ours the oldest continuously active fraternity at Fresno State.

In 1949, the members of Sigma Tau decided to seek affiliation with a national fraternity, but with the reservation that such affiliation was with one of the top 2 or 3 national fraternities.  Sigma Chi was chosen as the number one fraternity in the country with which to affiliate, and work towards that goal was immediately started.  After three years of observation by Sigma Chi, Sigma Tau became the 122nd chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity on February 23, 1952.

At Fresno State, Sigma Chis include a former U.S. Congressman, U.S. Ambassador to Colombia & Honduras, Major General (Marines), three Superior Court Judges, a Fresno District Attorney, two Fresno City Mayors & the current Mayor of Clovis.

The Fraternity has also produced a U.S. President, scores of Senators, Congressmen & Governors, a Supreme Court Justice, Pulitzer Prize & Academy Award winners, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients, Fortune 500 CEOs, and countless other accomplished individuals in broad fields of endeavor.

"When I became a Sigma Chi it was great; I was very proud of the association.  It was kind of an instant confidence-builder for me, that what I considered the best fraternity on campus had actually wanted me.  I had always been very shy and without a lot of   confidence.  It was a really good social experience, and for me also a social  maturation and a great benefit."
